Hello Troop 161-

This Josh Frey here, and boy have I been active since leaving the troop. Since leaving I graduated from St. Catherine's High School, which ends that period of learning. After a week of relaxation, I was sent of to National Camping School for my Ecology Conservation Director certification, and boy was that a completely different kind of fun. I then returned, relaxed for two days, then hitched a ride with Josh Koz for a summer as Eco/Con Director at Robert S. Lyle. I had the greatest time ever, and I will be returning to staff their every year possible until I die. If you think the young bucks from 161 are slightly askew, you haven't staffed at Lyle. I also had the great pleasure of helping conduct ceremonies as Elachtoniket, which I will also be doing until I turn 21, and maybe later if I can trick some old folks. After the summer ended, I had a week of relaxation, then it was off to Ripon College. It is awesome here. I recieved a four-year ROTC scholarship, so once I graduate I'll be a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. Also, for the record, PT is the best thing I've ever done at six in the morning. I'm also active in Choral Union, which gets to sing the Alma Mater, which happens to have the exact same melody as the Lyle song. As for Boy Scouting stuff, I am currently webmaster of the Mascoutens Lodge web site, and am working on a complete redesign of site, which should be finshed by the second week of September, so check it out at that time at www.mascoutens.org. I'll definitely see you all at Lyle next summer, and maybe even at the Christmas Campout if Mr. F. schedules it to fit my time frame (any time between Dec. 13th and Jan. 15th). See you on the flip side.

Josh Frey

Hello Everyone!

Hi my name is Tyler Sanchez and I received my Eagle Scout Award June 28th 2004. Today is my first day back in Wisconsin--for the past month, I have been attending the LEAD Summer Business Institute at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Now that I am back from that wonderful experience, I have returned to my internship at SC Johnson Wax where work 40-hr weeks in their Global BPT Process Team. While I have been very busy over the past year, I continue to reflect on my experiences in Scouting and how it has made me a better person. I feel that some of the values that I hold closest to me such as honesty and integrity were molded during my Scouting career. It really changed me for the better. I'm not saying I was perfect--I had a few of the infamous "F-Talks" too, but I think that the way Mr. F wanted that you learn what you did wrong rather than punish you for what you did wrong really made him an amazing scout master. He was for me, and I'll bet he continues to remain an excellent example of all of scoutings values. I hope no one chooses to abandon this wonderful experience.

Rob Hart Greetings from your neighbor to the south! Yes, though I never thought I would see the day, I have Illinois plates on my car and find myself needing to say "Just wait until next year!" when referencing the local sports teams. I'll stay brief here and hit the high points from the last 10 years . . . I graduated from UW Madison in 1999 with a BS in Chemistry after a very enjoyable stay. I spent four years in the marching band and undertook mostly fruitless research into electron transfer dynamics in small molecules. However, I was bitten by the research bug. Inspired by a visionary solid-state chemist, I applied to several graduate schools and chose Indiana University in Bloomington where I worked on optical properties and structures of glasses. If you find yourself facing a bout of insomnia, you can download my thesis in pdf format from mypage.iu.edu/~rohart/Thesis/thesis.pdf. My defense was on March 10th and shortly thereafter I relocated to Naperville, which is about five miles west of the lab where I now work, which is at the corner of I-55 and I-294. The name of the place is Argonne (www.anl.gov) and it is run by the Department of Energy. In 1955 the world's first energy generating nuclear reactor was built here, and since then the lab has branched into a multitude of scientific endeavors. Currently I'm studying the structures of a number of materials with x-ray and neutron diffraction in order to better understand their properties. Our projects have applications in everything from geology to molecular physics. More importantly, I was married in September to a wonderful woman named Denise (who also happens to be a chemist . . .) We met when I was in my first year of graduate school. It is a big joke that we fell in love over the Quantum Mechanics textbook. As with all jokes, it is only funny because it is at least a little true! In our free time we like hiking and running together with our dog. Personally, I have found that I enjoy triathlons, mostly because I have no skill for throwing or hitting things or any coordination at all for that matter. In 2002 I completed a half-Ironman which is a 1.1/56/13 swim/bike/run event. I'm aiming for Ironman 2006 in Madison. Wish me luck! In Bloomington I was involved with a Troop and Venture Crew where I taught merit badges and served as the Crew Leader for a year. I was also on the District Committee for a year. For now I am concentrating on my career but plan to be involved to some extent with 161 as time allows. But I am positive that you have heard enough about me. I consistently recall the Scout Law when I am faced with a difficult situation and look upon it as my moral compass. I credit my experiences in scouting with teaching me to make the best of unpleasant circumstances and to look for the best in everyone you meet. I would love to hear from any/all of you -- feel free to get in touch if you find yourself in the greater Chicago area! YIS
